Behind Closed Doors
Helpful Hands: Home for Children and Young Adults
(We want to keep the children of this town disciplined and healthy till they can take care of themselves)
(Like this only a little more run down, but not too much)
Helping Hands has been around for many years, and to the outside world everything that goes on inside of this building it what orphanages should all try and copy. However, they are seriously mistaken. This home was started by a woman who thought children shouldn't be out on the streets causing problems. She believes in discipline, that goes a little too far over the top. Behind the walls of this building, so many terrible things happen. The kids living here are forced to work in dangerous situations, that could harm or kill them, and if they refuse...well they find themselves in a much worse situation. Some kids have been thrown into the basement for days at a time, with no light, or nothing to eat. They have also been known to be beaten almost to death. And even worse than the basement is the "box" it's barely big enough for them to fit, so when they are put there they cannot move, and all they are given is a tiny hole in front of their face so they can breath. The people in charge only use the children to do their bidding, and the children can't lash out or "bad" things will happen. Every once in awhile a child will mysteriously disappear and are never heard from again. If the "house parents" are asked, they either say they ran away, or every once in awhile, "Accidents happen."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some of the kids at Helping Hands, just take it, thinking they deserve this punishment, while others try and fight for what they believe. Just recently another child has gone missing, and the kids who fight have to decide whether they need to end this torture, or try and live through it, day by day.

Ok...soooo...I guess it's not too good, but I've never been good at opening posts....So go ahead and PM your characters, I'd love to see them! Keep in mind that this is based in the 1920's I'm thinking Chicago (that's where all the mob stuffs happened). Just try not to make your character seem too modern...I now it can be kinda hard, but I believe in you! Oh and don't make them too perfect, and your character will be passed very easily...
Oh, and as of right now...don't make any more than two characters...we might add more later...I like quality better than quantity!
OH (Again)! If you want to make a "Helping Hands Helper" (Person in charge) You are welcome to, but make sure they aren't over the top.....and yeah...that's about it...if I forgot something feel free to let me know and I will fix it right away!

Name: Selwyn Bailey
Age: 16
Picture and/or Description:
Background:
Selwyn's parents were wealthy British scientist-explorers who loved her dearly and took her with them on their world-girdling adventures. Her father Cecil, was an archaeologist and aviation pioneer. Her mother, Andrea, was an ethnographer and naturalist who wrote down everything she could learn about the peoples and natural environments they explored. Selwyn spent her childhood on the swaying decks of sailing ships, the basket of her father's guided balloon, on the backs of camels, donkeys, horses or elephants on treks to hidden ruins, or hiking up narrow Himalayan trails or jungle footpaths. She has assisted her father in surveying mysterious sites from Luxor Temple to Ankor Wat, meditated with Tibetan lamas, and joined in shamanic initiation ceremonies in the Amazon jungle.
By the time Selwyn entered her early teens, the map of the world was pretty much filled in, but a whole new avenue of adventure was opening up: the sky. The family moved to the United States, where Cecil could set out to push the envelope of aircraft and airship design. He taught Selwyn to fly, and she developed an interest in aerobatics and air racing. At the age of 15, Selwyn was on the verge of making a name for herself as an aviatrix. While her father worked at the family's workshop and aviation school in Illinois, Selwyn went on a world tour, accompanied by her mother.
Having being given a pearl necklace by representatives of the Imperial Japanese government after an air show in Japan, she was given the nickname "the Pearl Daredevil." On her triumphant return home, a life of fame and adventure seemed to lie ahead. Then tragedy struck.
Selwyn's last memories of her parents consist of being awakened as flames spread through their home, hugged fiercely, having a prepared knapsack pressed into her hands, and being told to flee when given the signal. Then, a chaos of fire, gunshots, and screams. Selwyn escaped into a neighboring cornfield and made her way to the farmhouse, where the neighbors had already called the police.
Selwyn never found out what was in the knapsack. She was taken to the police station for questioning as a witness before being sent to the Helping Hands Home for Children and Young Adults. Her extended family in England had long been scandalized by Cecil's antics, his "Jezebel of a wife" and "feral daughter." They refused to adopt Selwyn. After insuring that the Home would provide "an environment of strict discipline and moral upbringing" for her, they gave the Home a large donation, and left her to them.
Selwyn's year in the Home has been pure hell so far, as every effort is made to break her spirit and turn her into a "properly" obedient young woman.
Personality:
Though deeply wounded by the loss of her parents and her former life, Selwyn is generally cheerful and outgoing, and more than a little eccentric. She is completely unable to adopt the behaviors expected of a Proper Young Lady, and constantly gets in trouble with the "Helping Hands Helpers" who oversee the children at the Home. Her mind wanders a lot, and she has a great deal of difficulty focusing on the menial tasks she is given.
Selwyn does not talk about her past. In part because she is very strictly forbidden to do so (a week in the Box, at least), but mostly because so many of the other orphans don't have happy memories, and she does not want hers to make them even more miserable. However, when she can get away with it, she tells adventurous bedtime stories to the younger children, and these often have many authentic-sounding details.
Extra Info:
Selwyn is not well-known as an aviatrix. There were a few articles in the papers during her first and only flying tour, enough for the nickname to catch on among reporters, but she is unlikely to be recognized. The authorities at the Home seem especially intent on trying to turn her into a meek, obedient future wife. Selwyn thinks that this is because they know that if she did become a famous aviatrix after getting out, she could use her position to expose the Home. She fears that she may be the next to "disappear," or that whoever killed her parents will return for her.

Name: Amelia (Mia) Watson
Age: 15
Appearance:Except more era like clothes and her hair doesn't have the recent style bangs.
Personality: Mia is very soft spoken and shy. She doesn't make friends easily, even though she wishes that she could. She loves everything about people and always seems able to forgive and forget, even when it is really hard to forgive the Helping hand Helpers. She is good natured, and though she is small and weak, she tries to help people in any way that she can.
Bio: Mia has been in Helping Hands for 7 years. She grew up in a torn family, her mother having her out of wedlock. She remembers being little and being tormented because of her mother. Her mother was a flapper, and Mia can always remember all of the terrible looks and names people gave them as they walked down the street. When Mia turned 8 she was taken from her mother, by people who told her that her mother was an unfit mother, and that she could not take care of her correctly. She still doesn’t understand this, because even through everything that her mother did, she was the best mother that Mia could have asked for. In truth someone reported her mother abusing her child, and no one questioned this wealthy person, who just wanted revenge on Mia’s mother for refusing him.
Since Mia has been at Helping Hands, she tries to stay out of the punishments. The mean taunting words from the orderlies don’t hurt her, because she thinks that since she has been tormented her whole life it is what she deserves. Like all of the other kids she hates the box and basement, but more than the rest she hates the basement, and tries to stay out of it. The only reason she gets put in there is helping the kids who have just come out of their “punishment.”
Extra Info: Mia is terrified of the dark, and would do anything to stay out. This comes from the night she was taken, her mother tried to hide her and she can remember the overwhelming darkness as she heard her mom try to make the people leave. Mia was also training with her mother to become a singer, so she has a very sweet a good voice. (Nothing professional though)
Name: Charles (Charlie) Knowles
Age: 17
Appearance: CLICKY!(His hair is so long, because he has been in the orphanage so long, and the “helpers” don’t let him get his hair cut hardly ever.)
Personality: Very outspoken and rebellious. Let’s just say he’s seen a good share of punishments. Charlie is known to joke even in the darkest situations, because he can’t stand to see the kids around him so afraid all of the time. If he’s not getting into trouble, Charlie can be found with the younger kids trying to bring a smile to their faces. He is excited to almost be 18 and get out in the world, but he doesn’t think that the orderlies will let him reach the age. Charlie isn’t afraid to stand up for what he believes, and has grown to not fear the things that people can do to him. A lot of other kids see him as a big brother, and aren’t afraid to ask him for anything, and if he can, he will do whatever they ask.
Bio: Charlie knows nothing of his family. He only has a picture that was with him when he came to helping hands. He was one of the first children at Helping Hands, back when they were first getting started. From a very young age, he was “the hero” of the group. He would sneak into the staff kitchen at night stealing food, and anything that he could, or taking the place of another. He has also been punished throughout the years for breaking other kids out of the basement, or box. He is surprised that he has survived this long, because of all the trouble he has gotten himself into. He has never tried to escape the orphanage, but has thought about it many times. However, he can't find the stength to leave the other kids behind to fend for themselves.
Extra Info: Charlie isn’t great at many things, seeing as he has been at the orphanage his whole life, but he is very smart. Not necessarily book smart, but street smart, and knows how to break into almost anything and everything.

blue eyes, auburn hair that comes to mid back. likes to wear long sleeves. usually barefoot.
Personality: Little shy, motherly, very introverted, easily scared, will attack if cornered.
Bio: Cassandra came from a normal family. Her parents died in an accident many years ago. None of her other relatives wanted her because she was "stupid". She is slightly autistic. She doesn't talk much, but she does like to communicate with either her hands or by grunting. She can write, but it's slow going for her.
Extra info: She can write simple sentences. She's very agile, like she can climb trees and hide in small spaces.
Notes Is autistic. Has trouble being social with older children because of years of teasing and abuse from orphan keepers.

Name: Jacob McNelis
Age: 11
Appearance:
Personality: Jacob is a troublemaker...who is really an attention seeker. He gets into trouble so the other kids know who he is. He has an insatiable need for affirmation...especially from Charlie, whom he idolizes. Jake is also a dreamer . He hopes to one day leave the orphanage and become an American spy. The only problem is Jacob is clumsy, and he knows it. He always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and as much trouble as he brews up, he never gets away with anything. Some of the older kids find him endearing, and Charlie especially has taken him under his wing. He's flighty and naive, but it's hard to not like Jacob.
Bio: Jacob's father was a military man who ruled his house with an iron fist. His father had put him to work as early as Jacob could remember. He was out on the streets, shining shoes, selling papers, and sweeping shops for local owners. For a few years, Jacob got a break. His father was sent overseas during WWI, and his mother let him be a kid during that time. When his father returned, he was severely depressed and constantly paranoid. When he discovered that his lazy son hadn't done a decent days work while he was off at war, he snapped, taking it out on his wife. Mrs. McNelis eventually couldn't take it, and left her husband. That was the straw that broke the camel's back for Officer McNelis. Although Jacob never saw his father again. He was too young to understand where his father had gone, but the policeman was very clear that Jacob would never see him again. A few days later, Jacob found himself scared and alone at Helpful Hands. Charlie, one of the older boys, took a liking to Jacob, and showed him the ropes. Ever since then, Jacob is never very far from Charlie, and he is often the wingman in whatever shenanigans Charlie has up his sleeve.
Extra info: Although he isn't nearly as crafty as Charlie, Jake is small enough to fit into the places Charlie can't. He isn't afraid of much, and even when he is, it's never hard to convince him to take on a new challenge. Though he isn't always there to listen to Selwyn's stories, he is enthralled and inspired by them. At times, they are what keeps him going...along with Charlie's encouragement, of course.

Name: Emily & James Callan
Age: 15 & 12 respectivly
Appearance:
Personality: Emily is bookish, quiet, and obeident, doing chores, school work, and eating meals dilligantly and without complaint. She listens to authority without hesitation, half out of training, and half out of fear. If she is yelled at or pushed around by anyone, she dosn't stand up for herself, and usually just takes it, or walks away. Though an introvert who usually dosn't interact with people, she is very kind: This is mostly displayed through her affections towards her younger brother, James. She is not very social, and prefers to spend her free time reading alone in her room, spending time in the library, or taking walks outside; that is, when she is not with her little brother. She is very smart and intelegant, and well learned. But Emily's one weakness is her imagination. She loves to escape into the world of her books, and imagin she is in them, coming up with all sorts of mysterious and heroic plots she can participate in. She loves to roam about the mansion when no one is looking, imagining she is a sluth and discovering all kinds of hidden trinkets and books in her wanderings. Also, because of her quietness, she is good at being not noticed, thus hears alot about what is going on in the orphanage and the outside world by 'accedently' listening in to conversations. She also likes to salvage the caretakers daily newspapers and listen in on the radio. For someone who is seen as timid and meek, Emily is a bit more curious and daring than some people would think.
Like Emily, James is extremely smart and bookish, though while she is shy about it, James is extremely extroverted and social, known as the orphanages know-it-all and smarty-pants. While he is a very good hearted boy with noble intentions, this tends to get him into trouble sometimes: he is tardy because he looses track of time in the library, or gets scolded in class because he is so excited to learn he accedently speaks out of turn or shouts out an answer. He also loves to carry on long philisophical and stratigical conversations with anyone he can follow around, even if those conversations are mostly one sided. He will often pepper the other orphans with tid bits of advice and knowlege. Because of his walking dictionaryness, he tends to be seen as an annoyance, but his heart is very caring and loyal. James is also openly sensitive, and will pick a fight with, or yell at anyone who tries to physcally or mentally hurt himself and especially his sister. James aspires to be a professor at collage, like his father (however he has no idea what subject he would teach, because he is so interested in everything.)
Bio: The Callan's grew up in an extremely wealthy family. Both their parents came from esteemed backrounds: their father was a chemisist professor at college, their mother a famous singer. As children, they were not in want or need for anything. They recieved the best education at private schools. Their parents were very loving, however their father was often very buisy because of his career. Their mother quit her singing career to spend more time with her children, and because of her failing health.
However their father got involved with illegal buissness, and the mob. One day at work, he was shot dead. Their mother, who had been hospitlized eariler, soon died of a broken heart. Dirt was smeared on their family name because of their fathers dealings, however the siblings refused to belive anything but that their father was loving. In their parents will, the siblings were left all of their parents wealth. But because of the law, they cannot come into possession of it untill they are 18. Because of the slander of their family name, and because they were left all of the family's wealth, what only living reletive they had would not take them in, thus they were inducted into the orphanage. They have only been there for a few weeks.
Extra info: Before their mother died, she was giving Emily private singing lessons. Emily can sing almost as well as her mother, and has a very impressive voice, however she has not sung since her parents death
